STEWARDS LIVING A GOD-PLEASING LIFE:

  FAITH IS THE FOUNDATION

22nd Sunday After Pentecost

October 11 & October 12, 2008

Welcome! Each of you is important to God and to us as well. May you find here God’s grace, and be blessed by this worship service. Guests are encouraged to introduce yourselves to Pastor Allison and Pastor Akers and complete the information in the Rite of Fellowship pad located on the pew in the Sanctuary. Large print services and assistive listening devices are available from the ushers or at the Welcome Center. For Pastoral Care please call Pastor Allison or Pastor Akers at the church or at home. A Sitting Room [in the east wing] and a Nursery [in the west wing] are available for infants through age three during each worship service. If little ones become restless during the service and are disturbing other worshipers, please take them out of the service until they have settled down. Thank you!  “The Lutheran Hour” can be heard every Sunday at 8:00 AM on WIOU 1350 AM, sponsored by Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer.

This weekend’s altar flowers are given to the Lord in love by Gary & Karen Jewell

in celebration of their 15th wedding anniversary.

FAITH IS THE FOUNDATION

Faith is the Foundation is the theme this week as we focus on STEWARDS LIVING A GOD-PLEASING LIFE.  "And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him" (Hebrews 11:6).  Through faith, we can become the God-pleasing stewards that He wants us to be.  Stewardship expresses our faith.  Don't miss next week when we will discuss discipleship as the path for stewards living a God-pleasing life. Remember Commitment Sunday – October 26th.

HOG ROAST PROCEEDS

Checks are in the mail for a total of $2,613.00 to the Orphan Grain Train Organization,   located in Seymour, IN.  They are serving as a focal point to bring food relief materials and services to victims in various south central Indiana communities.  Your gift is particularly appreciated as their destruction activities have severely stretched their transportation and fuel budget.  Thank you for your support.

LETTER FROM HAITI LUTHERAN MINISTRY AND MISSION FUND

“Dear friends and supporters at Our Redeemer:  Thank you so much for continuing to be a faithful supporter of the Lutheran church in Haiti.  I especially thank you for your recent generous donation to help address the suffering of so many Haitians resulting from the devastating floods they recently experienced.  God bless you.  Paul Klenner, President.”

FAITH INKUBATORS DOES NOT MEET TODAY!

ADULT BIBLE CLASS

All adults are invited to attend a joint Bible study, “God Enables Our Stewardship – Part 1”, led by Pastor Allison in the Fellowship Hall during the Sunday School hour at 9:30 AM.

HIGH SCHOOL BIBLE CLASS

The high school Sunday School class will continue its unit on "anger" this morning with the lesson "Soul on Fire." The class is led by Robin Truesdell and Ginny Hingst.  Join us each Sunday at 9:30 AM in the Youth Room, up the stairs across from the church kitchen.

SUNDAY SCHOOL

The Sunday School children in grades 1-8 will meet in the choir room behind the balcony for an opening.  Then they will go to their respective classrooms.

TODAY IN SUNDAY SCHOOL

Parents, this information is included in the bulletin to help facilitate discussions with your child about what they talked about in Sunday School today.  This morning in Sunday School the theme of our lesson is “God Floods the Earth” based upon Genesis 7:1-8:22; 9:8-16.  The Bible point that is emphasized is “God’s promises are always reliable.”

BIBLE BOOKMARKS

All 3-4-5 graders!  Pick up the new Bible Bookmark at the Welcome Center.  The topic is “Even More Miracles of Jesus.”

SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS

First of all, please congratulate your child on achieving their goal for 2008 Spring and Summer quarters.  Because of Redeemer’s generous children, we were able to send a $500.00 check to Kokomo’s Habitat for Humanity.  Our Sunday School children should be proud of themselves to know that they have done something great for our community!

“GRIEF SHARE” – MEETS THIS MONDAY!

“Grief Share” meets this Monday, October 13th at 6:30 PM in Mission Hall.

LADIES’ BIBLE CLASS

TUESDAY EVENING BIBLE CLASS

J FAMILY FRIENDLY IDEA

J Why do Christians give?  Like everyone else, we belong to God because He created us and keeps us going.  But as Christians, we belong to His kingdom of salvation through our baptism.  This motivates us to give what we have.  We don’t give to God because we owe Him, but because His powerful Gospel is working in us!

MOM’S KOINONIA

Join us this Thursday from 9:30 - 11:00 AM for Mom’s Koinonia and our study The Many Wonders of Heaven – The Joy of Our Future Home.” The study emphasizes the joy that awaits all Christians in our future home.  The study time is followed by prayer and fellowship.  We meet in the Church Library.  There will be food, fellowship, prayer, and study of God’s Word.  Talk to Pastor Akers if you require babysitting for your child.

THE GROUNDS

The Grounds for high school youth is going to the corn maze on Highway 19 tonight [Sunday]!  Questions? talk to Jonathan Guse or Laura Durr.

SILENT DAY OF PRAYER – WEDNESDAY – OCTOBER 22ND

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God, and the peace of God will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” [Phil. 4:6-7]  Right now, our country has problems with war, an election coming up, and Wall Street greed, not to mention people in our community losing jobs and medical coverage.  Please fill out a blue prayer card with your prayer requests.  Join us on Wednesday, October 22nd to “present our requests to God.”

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church invites Our Redeemer members to the annual Reformation Service at their facility.  The service is Sunday, October 26th with a chili/hot dog supper prior to worship.  The meal will begin at 5:30 PM and the service at 6:30 PM.  All congregation members need to bring is an appetite for food, song, fellowship and worship.

THRIVENT NOMINATIONS

For more than 100 years, Thrivent Financial has been guided by its members, shared Lutheran traditions and Christian values. Today, these same traditions and values form the foundation of an organization dedicated to improving the quality of life of those it serves.  Would you like to be a part of this organization?  Nominations are now being accepted for leadership positions.  For questions, or to become an active leader, call Dave Turner, or Steve Gaunt, or any other current Thrivent officer.  Nominations will be open until the end of October.

FROM OUR PARISH NURSE

Knowing what’s in the food you eat will make it easier to manage your weight, blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes.  You can learn a lot from a label.  To get you better acquainted with the Nutrition Facts panel on food labels, pick up a handout on the table near the Welcome Center.  Also, there is a flyer providing information about the October 23rd Howard County Health Fair.  Two programs on “What’s in a Healthy Meal Plan” will be offered October 20th at 6:30 PM and again on October 27th at 1:00 PM.

BOX TOP REMINDER

“Last week at Pastor Akers’ Sunday School Class, I passed out Box Top bonus forms.  The form says you should buy Box Top Products from Target, but that is not necessary.  You can use any Box Top product purchased at any store.  Sorry for any confusion this may have caused.  When you are ready to turn in your forms drop them in the box in the school entrance, or if you have children enrolled at RLS have them put the form in the classroom collection boxes.  Each household can fill out two forms.  Thank you for your support of this program.  Tami Brooks.”

THRIVENT MEMBERS

“I would like to invite all Thrivent members to participate in a live Thrivent.com event featuring Russ Swansen, Thrivent Financial Chief Investment Officer.  The event, scheduled for 8:30 PM ET, Thursday, October 16th, will feature Russ sharing his perspectives on the current financial crisis, its impact on personal finances and what investors should do next.  Members will be able to view the event live by visiting www.thrivent.com.  If you have any questions, please call me.  Thank you!  J.J. Stoltenberg, FIC, Financial Representative, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.”

INTERESTED IN  HANDBELL CHOIR

We need interested hand-bell players willing to learn, and commit.  Please contact Juanita Martin-Davis.

THANK YOU – FALL RALLY

Thank you to everyone who assisted with LWML Sunday last weekend.  Ladies, a Fall Rally is scheduled for Sunday, October 19th at Grace Lutheran Church in Muncie.  Ruth Thomas, Indiana LWML President will be the guest of honor; guest speakers are Kathy Tucker and Juanita Martin-Davis.  Please contact Caroline Howard for more information.

STEWARDSHIP

FAITH IS THE FOUNDATION

Do you ever find yourself comparing yourself to the heroes of faith that we read about throughout Scripture and whose exploits are capsulized in Hebrews 11?  Most of the time, we come up short, don't we?  When is the last time you parted the waters of a river with your stick?  Have you slayed any giants lately?  How many years have you spent as a spy in service to your country?

We remember the feats of courage and strength while oftentimes forgetting about the failures of the men and women whose names are sprinkled throughout the pages of Scripture. We forget that they were not bigger-than-life people; they were simply people chosen and equipped by God to carry out His work in His world.  They are people commended for their faith, even though there is evidence that, at times, their faith faltered.

We are not unlike those heroes.  We, too, are called to be stewards living a God-pleasing life, and we, too, please God only through faith.  "And without faith it is impossible to please God . . .” (Hebrews 11:6).  At times, our faith, just like those Biblical heroes, falters.  Then we find it is God Who is faithful – faithful to forgive, faithful to renew, and faithful to equip us for further service as His stewards.

SECURING EACH CHILD’S FUTURE… FOR ETERNITY.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.” Jer. 29:11

Have you seen the new finished classrooms?  If not, please come over and check them out. God has been faithful through this entire project. Thank you again to everyone who helped in any way. A special thank you goes out to Gordon Claucherty for spearheading the project.  We are planning an Open House in early November. Watch the bulletin for more information!

RLS FUNDRAISERS WITHOUT THE FUNDRAISING

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Your school Parent - Teacher League strives to find ways to raise funds to enhance our children’s education without the use of direct sales. Following is a list of ways we can raise funds through corporations. We hope you will help us utilize these options to their maximum potential. There will be a central drop off location at the school main entry for items that need to be collected to obtain these corporate funds.

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION

Clip the white “Box Tops for Education” (not the Betty Crocker points) logo from participating products (General Mills, Pillsbury, Betty Crocker and Ziploc) and bring them in to the drop off point. The school receives $0.10 for every box top sent in. For more information visit www.BoxTops4Education.com.

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION MARKETPLACE

Shop online from over 300 retailers (Ann Taylor, Nordstrom, Barnes & Noble, Lillian Vernon, Pottery Barn, Target, Kohl’s) through www.BoxTops4Education.com and earn up to 8% cash back for the school while saving gas and time.

CAMPBELLS SOUP LABELS

We are now collecting Campbell’s product labels and lids. We do not need the entire label. Just the UPC code with the “Labels For Education” logo. Simply clip and drop off in the drawer labeled Campbell’s Labels at the drop off box by the school entrance. We earn 1 to 5 points to use towards equipment. For a complete list of products, visit www.labelsforeducation.com.

INK JET CARTRIDGE RECYCLING

Bring in your used computer ink jet cartridges to the drop off point and they will be sent in for recycling. The school receives $3.00 for every cartridge.

MARKET DAY

Purchase restaurant quality food in bulk at a reduced price through the RLS PTL Market Day program and an average profit of 10% from your purchase will go to the PTL funds for use for the school. The food has a 100% satisfaction guarantee that is provided by the Market Day Company. Order online at www.marketday.com.

MARSH COMMUNITY SHOPPER

Apply for a Marsh Fresh Idea Card (not a credit card) and have the cashier swipe it each time you shop at Marsh. Your total purchase will earn us points towards free educational equipment. You need to designate RLS as the organization you want to support. You can apply on-line at www.marsh.net or at the store. Our School code is 28992.

MEIJER GUEST CARD

Apply for a guest card and have the cashier swipe it each time you shop at Meijer with your Meijer Credit Card or cash. A percentage of your purchase will go to the school. For more information visit www.Meijer.com/rewards.

SCRIP FOR TUITION

RLS families can help themselves earn tuition credit by purchasing (at face value) gift cards/certificates for stores, restaurants, motels, gas stations, etc. A portion of each purchase remains here at the RLS Scrip for Tuition program, and the remainder is used to purchase the gift cards/certificates. The portion remaining here is divided between each family’s tuition credit and Scrip for Tuition maintenance. A complete listing of the available retailers is at www.glscrip.com. Kohls, and Marsh are also available. Periodically, the earned tuition credit is posted to each participating family’s account. At no time do Redeemer families receive cash from this program. Scrip for Tuition updates and the schedule of order dates and pick-up dates are published in the Redeemer School News. For more information contact Scrip volunteer coordinators Peggy Gaylor or Debbie Street.

TYSON PROJECT A+

Simply clip the Tyson A+ logo from Tyson products and bring them in to the drop off point. The school receives $0.24 for every label sent in. For more information visit http://ProjectAPlus.tyson.com.

Thank you for your continued support!
