THE 11th SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

August 7 & August 8, 2010

Welcome!  God says, “Gather to Me My faithful ones, who made a covenant with Me” (Psalm 50:5, NRSV). We have come to worship God in spirit and in truth. If you are a guest, thank you for visiting.  Please introduce yourself to Pastor Akers and complete the information in the Rite of Fellowship pad located on the pew. Large print services and assistive listening devices are available from the ushers or at the Welcome Center. For Pastoral Care please call Pastor Allison or Pastor Akers at the church or at home. A Sitting Room [in the east wing] and a Nursery [in the west wing] are available for infants through age three during each worship service. If little ones become restless during the service and are disturbing other worshipers, please take them out of the service until they have settled down. Thank you!  “The Lutheran Hour” can be heard every Sunday at 8:00 AM on WIOU and sponsored by Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer.

Children: Don’t forget to pick up the new Bible Bookmark at the

Welcome Center.  The topic for this week is “Cooperation.”

STEWARDSHIP MINUTE

Hebrews 11 is the great “faith chapter” of the Bible, pointing out that by faith the saints of old lived their lives to the glory of God.  By faith they were able to do great things that demonstrated that God was at work in their lives.  By faith we are also the children of God and are equipped to do great things that give evidence that God is at work in us.  By faith we are sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not yet see.  That makes for joyful living!    Heb. 11:1-16

“REDEEMER REPORTER” DEADLINE IS THIS THURSDAY!

The Grounds for high school youth (including the newly confirmed 8th graders) meets in the Youth Room tonight (Sunday) from 6:30-8:30 PM.  Questions? talk to Jonathan Guse or Pastor Akers.

J FAMILY FRIENDLY IDEA

J Making the sign of the cross means to draw an invisible cross on yourself during certain times of prayer or worship.  Take your thumb and two fingers and hold them together.  Next, touch your forehead, then your tummy, then your left shoulder, then your right shoulder, and finally your chest.  At your baptism the sign of the cross was first made upon you by your pastor.  When we make the sign of the cross we are reminded of our baptism.

WATCH #7

We Are The CHurch is a spiritual renewal weekend designed to further your relationship with God and other Christians. It is a rare opportunity to escape from the temptations and traps of the world. WATCH #7 will take place September 24-26 at Sangralea Valley. Register by filling out a lift off lemon form and place it in the box marked WATCH at the Welcome Center.

WATCH COMMONLY ASKED QUESTION

A commonly asked question about WATCH: You say this ends around 5:00 PM on Sunday. Are you really going to make us miss church? You won’t be worshipping here on Sunday morning, but you will be worshipping many times throughout the weekend. The whole weekend is designed to help improve your understanding of our Lord and His ways, so the experience will make going to church a more satisfying thing for you to do.  Next week's question: “I suppose we’ll sit in little groups and share our feelings. I don’t like to do that!”

IU OR PURDUE???

Senior Guys: Are you or someone you know headed to IU or Purdue this fall? If so, be sure to check out Beta Sigma Psi Lutheran Fraternity. As Beta Sigs we strive to exemplify the three S’s (Spiritual, Scholastic, and Social) in our lives. We take our Lutheran Faith seriously as well as provide scholastic support and social fellowship. Feel free to come to rush events on campus or contact us directly. For Purdue, John Frey: freyja@purdue.edu. For IU, Andrew Rusch: ajrusch@indiana.edu.

NURSERY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

We would like to be able to offer childcare for children under the age of three to parents and visitors during the 10:45 service on Sunday mornings again, starting August 22nd.  In order to do this we need volunteers! Please prayerfully consider volunteering for one Sunday during the quarter.  Whether you’re the parent of a little one, or whether your children are grown and gone, please consider making a difference in our church! While it may seem like a thankless job, be assured that it can make a world of difference for moms and dads of little ones to have time for uninterrupted worship and reflection while their young child(ren) are cared for in a safe and loving environment.

Keep in mind that many parents only take their children to the nursery if they are becoming a distraction to others. If you are scheduled for nursery duty and no children show up in the first 15 minutes of the service, feel free to go back to the sanctuary. We only ask that you sit in the back where an usher can easily get your attention should you become needed in the nursery.

If you are interested in volunteering, please fill out the information below.  Return it to an usher or the white box in the Welcome Center no later than August 8th. There will be a sign up sheet hanging on the bulletin board in the nursery if you have specific dates you want to go ahead and volunteer for, otherwise I will call you to make sure the date(s) I’ve put you down for will work for you.
